KUSA – Five people are in the hospital after a wreck tied up traffic for hours on I-70 in Genesee.

The crash happened around 2:45 p.m. at mile marker 253 just west of the Genesee Interchange. Colorado State Patrol says a Ford F-250 traveling eastbound lost control when its front tire blew.

The truck rolled over the grass median and into a minivan carrying five passengers in the westbound lane.

“The cars in front of me slammed on their brakes [and people] were running [to help],” Melissa Johnson said, who was traveling about ten cars behind the minivan when the crash happened. “I know that there [were] some cries coming from the van that was hit from the passengers inside just asking why this would happen to them.”

Four people in the van, along with the truck’s driver, all went to the hospital with serious injuries.

“I’ve seen other accidents and I’ve been close to other accidents but this one was just boom bam done,” Johnson said.

Both directions of the highway were closed for investigation. Eastbound reopened around 4 p.m. after traffic was stopped in that direction for just over an hour.

Westbound lanes reopened around 5:15 p.m.
